Richard I Penny ND (1189-1199), Canterbury, Class 3, S-1347, N-967. 1.38gm. Attractive old cabinet toning, with clear lettering and quite bold portrait. According to the former description there is no die match in Mass for this piece. The Richard I Penny (1189-1199) from Great Britain is a silver Short Cross penny, featuring a crowned bust of Richard the Lionheart holding a sceptre, with a voided short cross and pellets on the reverse, designed to prevent clipping. Minted during his short reign, these small but historically rich coins are known as Class 3 or later types, identified by moneyer names and mints like Canterbury, with inscriptions like "RICA REX" (Richard King) and Latin legends.
